SA tops on the bowling green

The St Francis Bay Bowling Club hosted their second match between their local South African Bowlers and the “Rest of the World” – where the team consisted of members who were either born or live outside the country.

Graham Allison (right) presents the trophy for the “South Africa vs Rest of the World” Bowling competition to Johan Rust, captain of the winning South African team while Pam Stark (Secretary) looks on.

The competition was initiated by Graham and Jo Allison from England who spend the summer in St Francis and have been dubbed “swallows”.  They thought it would make an interesting competition for all the other “swallows” to compete against local bowlers. They also donated a trophy for the competition.

Forty-six bowlers participated and Graham, captain of the Rest of the World team, had people from England, Switzerland, Austria, Namibia, and the Netherlands (the largest and most vociferous group) playing for him.  As they were a player short, Chimpie Cawood was asked to play for them and it is believed that he nearly swung the result in favour of the Rest of the World team, but not quite.

National spirit!

Everyone entered the spirit of the game, dressed for the occasion, and those whose nationality could not be determined from their dress, had the flag of their nationality painted on their cheeks. While the scores were being tabulated, Graham had some fun items to entertain the group and in doing so raised R900 for club funds.

Club President, Johan Rust, thanked the Graham and Jo on behalf of the Club for organising the competition, obtaining prizes, and making the day such a success. The evening ended with a braai under the stars with perfect weather providing a fitting end to a wonderful day’s bowls.
